The business of remote work is evolving at an ever-growing rate. Businesses of all sizes are adjusting to the reality of working from home and they’re discovering that it can be beneficial to their business as well as their employees. Indeed, some studies show that businesses who have a strict remote work policy have higher levels of key performance indicators than those that don’t.

The term “remote work” applies to any arrangement in which employees or teams don’t have to visit a central office on a daily basis. This could mean that they are at home cafes, coworking spaces or even a van near the river.

Certain teams of employees are permanently remote, and this is often a result of a culture of trust and communication between the team members. Sometimes, a team might include a mix of remote workers who are permanent and flexible. Some of these employees are expected to attend work on certain days, while others will work exclusively from home.

Many jobs have high remote work potential, including cottage industry proprietors professional in food services coders, e-commerce employees, in-house career experts and federal employees. However, it’s important that companies plan ahead to be prepared for shutdowns or emergencies such as COVID-19. This could mean investing in cybersecurity, or having a backup for all data. It could also mean making sure that employees have the tools needed to be able to work from home. This could include things such as HIPAA-compliant CRM software, and virtual private networking (VPN).
